Usually when one thinks of “green tips” our minds immediately run to environmentally conscious thinking. In this case that’s true, but the “green” can also refer to the cash in your pocket that you’ll be saving. A lot of times when faced with a move people will dash out to the local moving and storage company to buy their supplies brand new boxes and brand new paper to wrap breakables. Instead, with just a little forethought the money spent to buy these items can be easily pocketed and some actions to preserve the environment can also be realized. Immediately after learning of your impending move start saving newspapers. Ask your friends, family, and coworkers to do the same for you. This alone will save you from having to purchase the 9.00 per bundle stuff (which can add up super fast). The same theory holds true with regard to boxes. If you’re moving to an apartment complex, chances are someone moved in just days before you. Ask the rental office if they can orchestrate a way to save some of the boxes from that move for your own use. Again, not only will you save by not having to purchase boxes, but you will be utilizing resources that are not only out there already but fully functional for additional use. And when it comes to buying bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts or those expensive moving pads, we suggest you look into your own linen closet (or borrow from friends and family) to make good use of blankets, sheets, and towels that function beautifully to protect breakables. When you consider that some companies charge as much as 14.95 for one quilted moving pad, doesn’t it just make prudent fiscal sense to use what you already have in your own closet? And last, if you are hiring a moving company (truck) to physically move your belongs, use a company that uses bio-fuel in their fleet (many larger companies are now doing this) and insist the company use the smallest truck possible to handle your move so excessive fuel usage does not become a factor.
